Food Facts on the Fourteenth: RD Day

Guess what today is?!?!?!?!
 Give up?
Do you need a hint??
Okay, here's a hint...

hint hint hint:

It's Registered Dietitian Day!!!

Yes, it's a real thing!
Besides my birthday, Halloween, Black Friday, the last day of Lent and Christmas,
it's the best day ever!!!
Not only that,
the entire month of March is
National Nutrition Month.
Sweet glory.

Most of you already know this,
but for any new blog stalkers tuning in for the first time,
I am currently a
Dietetic Student
at
Arizona State University.
Oh, and I absolutely love it.

Along with being a student,
I am a member of
{A.N.D}
formerly called
The American Dietetic Association
{A.D.A}

For close to a century,
this organization has been in existence
and has proudly remained
committed to the public's nutritional health.

Rooted in a humble but noble beginning,
members worked to feed
the troops healthfully during
World War I.

Since that time in 1917, the organization
became and remains
the world's
largest organization
of food and nutrition professionals.

Members are honored to aid in
creating solutions for current health issues
as well as
take part in research and initiatives
that work towards
prevention of said issues all together.

As I mentioned before,
the organization experienced a name change,
one I was honored to be present for.
On September 24th, 2011
at the Opening Session of the annual
Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo,
{F.N.C.E...read about my experience HERE}
Registered Dietitian
and
current President
Sylvia Escott-Stump
announced that the organization's name would change
and become effective January 2012.

The majority of the members within The Academy are
R e g i s t e r e d   D i e t i t i a n s
{RD}
and RDs are the cat's meow.

After spending the better half of the day
at the Arizona State Capitol
raising awareness about
our special day
and more importantly
the special work RDs do,
I brainstormed how to go about posting this month's
Food Facts on the Fourteenth.

Using pictures from today's successful event,
I decided to bring you all

"Five Signs you might be an RD"

#1: You give really fabulous interviews
 and
look absolutely fierce while doing it

...current Arizona Dietetic Association President Lynn Ladd
and
newly elected President of The Academy Dr. Glenna McCollum-Cloud

#2: You can't help but talk with your hands

...all...

 ...the...

 ...time...

#3: You are oh so photogenic...

...and/or
protective of the props being used in the pictures...
...wait, that might just be me.

#4: You are passionate about educating others
 ...Directly after her interview,
Glenna asked the Channel 3 reporter
"Now, what can YOU do better for your health starting now?"
Yep.
Passionate.

#5: Most importantly, you know you are
 never done learning
...I am very lucky to have these two women as my mentors,
Dr. Glenna McCollum-Cloud, RD and Shari Baird, RD.
I constantly am learning from them
and
I love being able to help them learn more as well.
It's a fabulous, necessary and amazing cycle.

RDs are the experts on nutrition.
Turn to them.
On March 14th from now on,
show your appreciation for all their work;
buy them Edible Arrangements and kiss them.
In that order.

As if being in this awesome field isn't enough,
I'm glad I have some of
the best
friends and fellow students
to share it all with.

Despite the acronym change from ADA to AND,
the mission of this
powerhouse organization
I love so much
remains the same,
it's goals
are stronger than ever before,
and the steadfast efforts
of its professional members
continue to
flourish, develop, and change lives.

Go RDs!
